The second round of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship got underway on Saturday with the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, a race that saw Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen drive from the pole position to the checkered flag almost uncontested. It was virtually a repeat of his performance at the season opener in Bahrain a week ago.

The Dutch youngster, who’s chasing his fourth straight title, set two records last season: the most wins in a single season with 19, and the most consecutive wins in a season at 10. With the 2024 season set to host a record 24 races, more records could certainly fall if Verstappen’s domination continues.

Fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez finished in second place in both of the previous two races, but the gap with Verstappen was substantial in both. In other words, it’s clear Verstappen is still in another league compared to his teammate.

From the rest of the field, Ferrari has thus far provided the most competition for Red Bull. Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc fought for a spot on the podium in the first round, with Sainz edging out his teammate by the end. Sainz missed the race in Saudi Arabia due to a case of appendicitis but the reserve filling in for him, 18-year-old Briton Oliver Bearman, drove impressively in his debut, managing to finish seventh overall and score his first points in the process.

McLaren is close behind Ferrari in terms of performance. Both drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris have battled for podiums.

Mercedes-Benz AMG in contrast has failed to deliver. The team, made up of drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, has struggled with the car in the high-speed corners though remains competitive elsewhere.

There’s still plenty of time for teams to make changes and for drivers to catch up with current leader Verstappen, as there are still 22 races to go this season.
