Real Madrid reach agreement in principle with Joan Martinez over contract extension — report

Real Madrid have an agreement in principle with youngster Joan Martinez over the renewal of his contract, according to a report from The Athletic’s Mario Cortegana.

It will be a three-year deal with a 50 million euro release clause to be included in the contract. This is because a three-year deal is the maximum a club can offer to a player under 18 years old according to Spanish Law. Martinez will have options to extend his contract should he achieve the sporting targets in his contract. His current contract expires in 2026.

It was widely reported that Real Madrid were planning to renew Martinez’s contract despite the season-ending ACL injury he suffered a few weeks ago, and that is what has ended up happening. The club clearly rates him highly, which is why they wanted him to play some first-team games after key departures in the centre-back department.

It is now a long waiting game for Martinez, but the good thing is he still has the trust of the biggest club in the world, and will be looking to make a return to action as soon as possible.
