Player Ratings: Real Madrid 5 – 2 Borussia Dortmund; 2024 UEFA Champions League Group Stage

Full match player ratings below:

Thibaut Courtois—9: The miracle man continues to make save after save — can he now be dubbed St. Thibaut? The 82nd-minute close-leg heel save was the icing on the cake that kept Madrid in the match at 2-2.

Lucas Vazquez—5.5: For a player that prides himself on his physical levels, he looked way off the pace. Never seen Lucas look so leg-heavy. Ran the length of the pitch on the second goal conceded, but it does not act as an excuse for getting beat to the ball. Made amends in the second half with the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute to make it 3-2.

Antonio Rudiger—8: Brilliant headed goal after parading into the box, which broke the dam and kickstarted the goal flurry in the second half.

Eder Militao—6: Very direct with his passing, hitting a number of long-range balls to Vinicius and Mbappe.

Ferland Mendy—4: No need to double down on Guirassy, freeing Malen inside the box. A large part of Madrid’s first goal conceded will come down to Mendy’s decision-making.

Luka Modric—7: Orchestrator in the second half, helping to keep the ball circulation fast and vertical.

Valverde—6: Played most of the match as the lone defensive pivot. The team’s disjointed press in the first half left him covering too much ground. Improved with the rest of the team in the second half.

Bellingham—7.5: Will be frustrated not to have nicked a goal in this match. Played centrally and had a lot more involvement near goal: hit the crossbar and nearly scored with a header from inside the six-yard box after a late-arriving run. At times, ran needlessly to press when the rest of the team were holding their position, causing huge gaps. His effort and attitude were eventually rewarded with a slide tackle near his own box that released Vini for the fourth goal.

Rodrygo—7: Put in a huge shift defensively and covered a lot of ground. Hit the crossbar in the first half and was part of the play that created the game-winning goal in the second half.

Vinicius Junior—9: Historic UCL individual performance. Transcended in the second half and scored a hat trick with goals that any player would be proud of, including a 60-yard carry with the ball that ended with a clinical strike from outside the box. Balon D’Or loading…

Kylian Mbappe—7: Much improved in the second half, using his sudden burst of speed from a standing position to create separation. One such moment down the right flank opened the game up with the first goal. Mbappe’s cross was perfectly weighted for Rudiger to smash home the header.

Substitutions:

Eduardo Camavinga—7: Produced some threaded passes through the defense from the edge of the opposition’s box.

Tchouameni—N/A: Late substitution for the injured Rodrygo immediately after Madrid went 3-2 up in the 83rd minute.

Arda Guler—N/A: Created the fifth and final goal after winning the ball back near the center circle and then freeing Vinicius on the counter.

Dani Ceballos—N/A: Good in tight pockets of space, moving the ball and maintaining possession.
