Four Real Madrid players started for Spain: Olga on leftback, Teresa and Navarro in midfield, and Athenea on the right wing. Antonia Silva started for Brazil on right back. Misa got subbed on later in the game and played 15 minutes and added time.
The game was dominated by Spain. Brazil had their hands full with Spain’s set pieces and crosses. The Brazilian goalie Lorena made a lot of saves, 8 of such in the entire game.
The Real Madrid midfielder, Teresa was in charge of taking Spain’s corner kicks and set-pieces in general. There were 7 minutes of added time in the first half during which Brazil’s Marta received a direct yellow for a foul on Olga. She raised her leg too high in efforts to get the high ball but hit Olga in the process. No one was injured but the legendary Brazilian got sent off for that foul. That foul gave Spain a freekick which was taken by Abelleira whose direct shot was ultimately saved by the goalie Lorena.
Brazil had a player down for the entire second half and it wasn’t an easy task for them, but they were more active in attack in contrast to the first half. The Spanish goalkeeper Cata Coll made 2 saves in the first 6 minutes of the second half and then later on, in the dying minutes of the added time, Misa, who got subbed on for Cata, had another save. The Brazilians were keeping the possession steady as well, giving a minimal advantage to Spain in that statistic with 55% to Brazil’s 45%.
In 68th minute of the game, Spain finally took the lead. The action was steadily built up through Spain’s left hand-side when Mariona sent in an intended cross who ended up being saved by the goalie and pushed straight to Athenea who kicked the ball in for 0-1.
Around 65’ Cata Coll got a hit where her nose bled, and it got worse in the matter of 10 minutes, thus the Madridista goalkeeper Misa replaced her in 75’. There were 16 minutes of added time and three extra minutes due to problems and the goal that occurred during those 16.
Spain’s Alexia Putellas doubled the lead with a rocket shot in 90+17’. On the other side, Antonia Silva suffered 2 fouls and had to go out a few minutes before the final whistle. Brazil didn’t have any substitutions left and Antonia had to endure as long as she could on pitch even though she played through pain. Later on, the Brazilian national team communicated that her injury would keep her out of the pitch for around 3 months due to a fibula fracture in her left leg. She won’t need surgery for the time being.
Below are the final standings for group C. Spain lead the group winning all 9 points in the 3 games, behind them are Japan with 6 and then Brazil with 3 who are also qualified to the quarterfinals being the second best third-placed team.
